These four 18" boudoir dolls are homemade versions. The porcelain heads, hands and feet were purchased and the buyer fashioned the clothing and stuffed the cloth bodies to which the appendages are attached. The only head with marks is the dark-haired Jo doll in the green flowered print cotton dress. She has some smudges on her forehead and nose; on her white cotton petticoat underneath there is a small brown spot on the lace in front. All of the ladies have dirt on their varied white collars. Meg is in blue and has blonde ringlets; she has the trademark on the back of her shoulders, Shackman, and 'made in Japan.' Three of the four dolls have this same label. Beth is in the brown dress and her skirt has been torn, as has the petticoat section directly under the tear. There is a large brown spot around the tear also, so that whole section would have to be removed and the skirt sewn back together, and the dress laundered to restore her. Her bustle, which they all have at the back, has a brown line on it, too. Amy is the one in red with blonde braids; she has a brown spot on the left side on the back of the skirt. All the dresses have different bodice designs with decorative buttons, lace or rickrack. Someone did a lot of work to produce this set of 4 dolls; even needing TLC as they do, they are lovely!
