THE 27TH DIVISION WENT OVERSEAS IN 1942, ADVANCE UNITS LEAVING FEBRUARY OF THAT YEAR. BY APRIL, THE FULL DIVISION WAS ONOAHU, HAWAII, AND OTHER ISLANDS AWAITING COMMITMENT.

IN JULY,1943, TRAINING BEGAN IN PREPARATION FOR THE ASSAULT AGAINST MAKIN ISLAND. STEAMING OUT FROM HAWAII LATE IN MAY, THE BOYS OF THE 27TH HIT THE BEACH ON JUNE 15TH 1944. UNDER MAJOR GEN. GEORGE W. GRINER JR. THE DIVISION BEGAN PREPARATIONS FOR THE OKINAWA OPERATION IN 1945.
