1863 Indenture Regarding Lease of Land on the Strand
The Queen to William Henry Smith
Huge Wax (Queen Victoria) Duchy of Lancaster Seal
An 1863 indenture being a licence to assign a lease of premises on the Strand, Middlesex, from the Queen to William Henry Smith Esq. Grant of lease to Abraham Walker of the Strand, woolen draper of property "now in the occupation of Thomas Lugham". Measures 26" by 20". Alittle damage on the indenture itself four small holes along folds and a circular impresssion from the seal tin. What is so special about this particular indenture is that it has the intact Duchy of Lancaster seal for Queen Victoria. The seal is intact, excellent condition and in its original protective tin container. It measures an impressive 3 3/4" in diameter and is over 1/2" thick.
The duchy seal changes with each monarch. This is the Duchy seal of Queen Victoria. On one side it has the allegorical figures of Faith and justice on either side of the throne. On the reverse follows the old type with a coat of arms, ostrich feathers, and crest, and the legend: SIGILLUM : DUCATUS : LANCASTRIÆ.
