IOWA CITY FLINT GLASS oval PLATTER crane STORK heron SATIN FROSTED 101 edge 1881

Offered for sale is a lovely and large antique glass platter in the STORK (aka crane or heron) pattern with a satin frosted center and a fancy egg-and-dart (often called 101) border around the edge. It was made by the Iowa City Flint Glass Company. This company only operated for 15 months in 1881 and 1882, making all of their products quite rare.

The platter measures 11 5/8 inches (29.5cm) from handle to handle, and 8 inches (20.3cm) wide at the middle. A U.S. quarter is shown in the first picture, to give an accurate impression of the size at a glance. Picture 2 shows the satin-frosted stork medallion in detail (note the inclusion just above the large stork's beak) and picture 3 shows the "101" edge, as well as a small air bubble. Picture 4 shows the faint scratches on the surface, and more small bubbles.

This platter is in great condition with no chips, cracks, deep scratches or repairs. There is no cloudiness. There are a few small bubbles (pictures 3 and 4) and one or two tiny inclusions in the glass, and some faint surface scratches (picture 4). These minor flaws are normal in antique glass like this, and do not detract from the beauty of this fine antique platter. Interestingly, there do not appear to be any straw marks present.
