MANUFACTURING TECHNIQUE: Excellent hand carving. Carved out of one piece of ivory. This Chinese ivory sculpture belonging to the Canton School dates back to the 19th century and is an exceptionally delicately crafted work of art showcasing a superior level of craftsmanship quality! Inside a large Venus clam on which smaller mussels, fish, clams as well as the miniature figure of a fisherman holding a basket are to be seen we find a mesmerizing landscape neatly hand carved in reticulation. At a closer look we can identify scholars with scrolls, sages in discussion or travelers on horse back or in sedan chairs. Besides neatly crafted pine trees we also see pagodas or little palaces.A wonderful example for the high quality standards of Cantonese ivory carvers at the period! .CONDITION: Very good ORIGINAL as found condition with a beautiful patina. recent ebay sales were over $1000.00 for simuliar piece!
