Up for auction, purchased at a recent estate, a set of netsuke. I believe they are both inspired by Oni (Japanese version of gnomes ogres or mischievious spirits) The mask netsuke or "memetsuke" is made of ivory. As we all know, the sale of elephant ivory is illegal since the ban in 1989 so it is most likely mammoth ivory. Very intricately hand carved and scrimshawed. Fine detail especially in the hair. It takes a great deal of skill and fine craftsmanship to be able to carve and scrimshaw such fine detail in miniature. Mask is about an inch and a half tall and an inch wide. PLEASE NOTE I don't believe the pictures I took do these items justice as they did not pick up the luster in the patina. The mask seemed dull and it has a very shiny luster. Mask is signed in back. The other piece I think is also an Oni. If a very abstract one. Oni are popularly portrayed as being red. Two green fish come together to make the eyes. Scales are scrimshawed in the fish keeping with the craftsman's attention to detail. The mouth is a slit type opening at the bottom. Refer to pictures. Both come with cords so they are ready to be attached to your kimono belt. E-mail me with any questions. Check out my other items ! Be sure to add me to your favorites list !
