Bunraku Ni Akusesu - A Close Look at BunrakuBunraku is the traditional art of Japanese puppetry. This is probably the least known Japanese theatrical art outside of Japan, and even within Japan, it is considered somewhat of a privilege to witness a performance. Unlike European marionettes which are dangled and manipulated from above by stings, Bunraku puppets are held and moved directly by the hands of the puppeteer. Master puppeteers are un-hooded, whereas subordinate practitioners wear hooded black garb to obscure their view from the audience. This book is a visual review of nearly all aspects of this fascinating theatrical art form. It looks at puppet construction and manipulation, back stage preparation, musical accompaniment, and of course, views of actual Bunraku performances. It even shows theater arrangement, both of the performers' areas, and audience seating A very thorough review of this fascinating art form.
