This is Japanese sowrd tanto in shirasaya. The blade is unsigned, shorted from wakizashi, shobu-zukuri (iris leaf) shape tanto, Muromachi period Ca.1550 made and modefied in 1900 era. The blade is out of polish, has minor scratch and flea-bite pittings which will be polish out easy. The temperline is straight temper throughout the blade. The forging grain is itame hada and no forging flaws. T is no bend, no nicks, no crack and the cutting edge is sharp. The blade is rested in ho-wood shirasaya with copper habaki. It measures 9 1/4" cutting edge, 1" width, 4mm thickness at the notch and 16" in shirasaya mountings. This is good polishing project tanto.
