This is a Japanese WW II army officers katana sword in type 98 mountings. Very large heavy sword. The Blade is unsighned, Shinogi-zukuri shape, traditional hand forged, water tempered blade. Guaranteed WWII 1945 or older. The gendai blade has no stamp on the tang and no maker mark. The blade is in old polish, shows very fine scratches on the surface but no rust or pitting. Some minor stains, nothing major.The temper line is wavy suguha with nioi-deki temper pattern throughout the blade and is deep tempered at the point. The forging grain is very visible which is very well forged itame-hada and no flaws at all. There are no bends, no nicks, no cracks, and the cutting edge is very sharp. Comes with a Lieutenant/captain rank silk tassel in excellent condition. The scabbard is leather covered over wood. It is dry condition, Has multiple cracks and splits. has been repaired professionally in the past. Not by me. The handle is tight fit and tsuka-ito wrapping is very nice with only handling wear on it. Ray skin underlining. The tsuba is brass. The Sword overall in scabbard measures 40". The grip from tip to tsuba is 10". Sword from blade tip to grip end is 37 1/2". The cutting edge is 26 1/2". The blade is 1 1/4" width and 7.5 mm thickness.
