Jose P. Alcantara (1911-2005) Filipino Artist Wood Sculpture Philippines This is a nice hard wood (similar to mahogany) sculpture by Filipino artist Jose P. Alcantara (1911-2005) executed after 1950’s. It’s 16” high and about 8” by 5” at its base. In good vintage condition with some nicks and scratches as shown in the close-ups. It weighs about 4.5 pound. Signed on the bottom “J.P. Alcantara” Listed below from WikiPilipinas: Jose P. Alcantara, was a sculptor. He was born on 15 December 1911 in Pasay City He did not have any formal education in fine arts; instead, he trained as an apprentice to Gonzalo Puyat, who introduced him to his first lesson in woodcarving. He also practiced at the Taller de Escultera de Tampinco. His earliest production belonged to the classical tradition. He joined the Art Association of the Philippines (AAP) in 1951 wherein his entries were marked by simplification and stylization of form. His works are marked by a Philippine sensibility having genre themes.
