A rare hand-gilt and finely tooled leather wallet, the design by Joseph Hoffmann for the Wiener Werkst ätte, c. 1910 Description: The Wiener Werkst ätte , the Vienna Workshop (Austria), was founded in 1903 to make and sell the best in modern design and craftsmanship. In an age that was dominated by shoddy mass production and mindless imitation of the past, the WW saw its task as the reuniting of form and function. 'Our strength has to lie in good proportions and materials well handled', it's founders Joseph Hoffmann and Kolo Moser proclaimed. Behind it's foundation lay the perennial ideal of the 'total work of art' (Gesamtkunstwerk) as Ruskin and Morris had envisioned it, with artist and craftsman working side by side in freedom and dignity. Josef Hoffmann (1870 - 1956) began studying architecture in 1887 at the Hö Staatsgewerbeschule in Brünn (now Brno, Czech Republic). Between 1892 and 1895 Josef Hoffmann continued his studies in Vienna under Otto Wagner and Karl von Hasenauer at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste. Josef Hoffmann then taught at the Viennese Kunstgewerbeschule from 1899 to 1936. In 1897 Josef Hoffmann joined Koloman Moser, Joseph Maria Olbrich, Otto Wagner, and Gustav Klimt to found the Viennese Secession.
