Here we have a lead Medieval ampulla in very fine condition. It is whole and complete with both lugs intact and is clearly a Compostella type with its scallop shell back. It bears a crowned W on the front. This was found in the Bristol Estuary. Ampullae were made to contain a small amount of Holy water and were dispensed as relics from shrines and holy wells to be worn suspended by the lugs around the neck. Miracles and cures of all kinds were attributed to them. Michael Mitchiner (Pilgrim and Secular Badges) Mitchiner further suggests that many ampullae were used in the annual springtime ’Blessing the Fields’ ceremony, in which the Holy Water they contained was sprinkled on the ground to give prayer for a good harvest. Having served this purpose, Mitchiner also suggests that the ampullae were discarded. Others have suggested that the ampullae were buried along with their contents for a similar purpose.
