You are bidding on a wood engraving by master of the medium, Leo Meissner. This is one of Meissner's largest format wood engravings portraying the fish shacks of Monhegan's Fish Beach. This quintessential island scene was a popular purchase and souvenir for visitors to Monhegan. While seagulls soar overhead the locals go about their daily business (the people portrayed were based on island inhabitants). The print dates from the 40's to early 50s. Buoys for lobster traps and cork floats can be seen hanging from the ramp's rail. Old wooden lobster traps are piled on he beach near dories.
The print's image measures approximately 11" x 8.5". The cream paper measures approximately 14.75" x 12.5". It is signed in pencil in the lower right. The print is #1 of an edition of 60. The title, "Fish Beach, Monhegan" appears in the lower left along with the artist's monogram carved in the block and located in the image.
