The 6c Maine stamp was issued in 1970 to celebrate 150 years of statehood. The block of four National Park Centennial stamps was issued in 1972. The Lighthouses of the Great Lakes series was issued in 1995, commemorating the great towers that made coastal and Great Lakes navigation possible.A reminder of the treacherous seas these lighthouses guard is the historic, authentic British coin recovered from the sunken wreck of the Admiral Gardner. Minted in 1808, the "Ten Cash" copper coin was en route to Bengal, India for use in the Madras Presidency. The Admiral Gardner was an 813 ton cargo ship built in 1797. On its 6th voyage as a regular East India Company vessel, the ship ran aground in gale winds off the Straits of Dover, off the coast of England, on January 25, 1809. Remarkably, these coins are still in excellent condition, preserved by icy water and soft mud."In June 1985, divers found these coins in the wreck of a British Ship lost over two centuries ago.
