Despite the title "for Ladies", this is a not a lightweight book but rather a comprehensive treatment of gardening, with explicit practical information on pruning, taking cuttings, planting techniques and tools, and so forth. The "Gardening for Ladies" section (96pp) covers: Stirring the Soil; Manuring the Soil and Making Hot-Beds; Sowing Seeds - Planintg Bulbs and Tubers - Transplanting and Watering; Modes of Propagation by Division, viz. Taking off Suckers, Making Layers and Cuttings, Budding, Grafting, and Inarching; Pruning, Training, Protecting from Frost, and Destroying Insects; Window Gardening, and the Management of Plants i nPots in Small Green-Houses. The "Companion" section is a dictionary encyclopedia of species and cultivars, with useful descriptions of the plants - their appearance, cultivation, etc. Also includes extensive discussion of gardening terms and techniques.
