In French they are called 'Embrasse' which translates as embrace. In the catalogue illustration below, there there are other designs of embrasse in the catalogue so you can see what was available at the time as well as the design up for auction. The hold backs are designed to use the curve of the arm to pull back the curtain without the need for tie back tassles, this particular design is quite pretty and would be stunning on a self-coloured damask or silk. The fixing plate is at the end of the arm of the hold back and it has a hole in it for fixing to the wall, as well as a flat bar which is the old method of fixing ( the French have a different fixing method to us, whereby they have a flat vertical bar lodged in the wall by means of a spike, onto which the back-plate bar is slotted). As we cannot get those fixings in the UK, normally drilling a hole in the back-plate will do it - these have a hole already drilled.The dimensions are: Overall drop: 12" or 30 cm Distance across curve: 5" or 12.5 cm Width: 1 1/2" or 4 cm on front-plate Nice original item.
