VOLTAIRE . (Francois-Marie Arouet). POEM UPON THE LISBON DISASTER. Lincoln, MA: Penmaen Press, 1977. Illustrated with 6 wood engravings by Lynd Ward. 7 x 11 inches; 33 pp. Text in French and English, en face. The French text was set by Michael Bixler in Monotype Bembo, and the English in Poliphilus. Hand printed by Michael McCurdy and Evelyn Clarke on Ragston French-fold (double leaves). Ragston is a thick textured paper with many of the qualities of handmade paper. Lynd Ward's engravings were printed directly from the block. Title page in 3 colors. This is one of 200 special copies printed on Ragston and signed on the colophon by poet-translator, Anthony Hecht. Lynd Ward also signs, as does Arthur Wilson . This is copy #159. An additional 100 copies deluxe were numbered I-C, printed on French Rives, and signed; 200 more were issued unsigned. Lynd Ward was one of the greatest wood engravers of the 20th century. His Novels in Woodcuts, such as Madman's Drum , Wild Pilgrimage , God's Man , Song without Words , and Prelude to a Million Years were predecessor to the modern graphic novel. His wood engravings and woodcuts grace the pages of numerous private press editions as well as trade--more than two-hundred publications.
