MADAGASCAR COPAL TUBE WITH HUGE RED-EYED LONG LEGS FLY Size: 64 millimeters tall and 21 x x 13 mm thick (2 1/2" x 13/16" x 1/2") Definately the largest fly I have seen in this material. 9-10 millimeters long. Wings akimbo. The size of a modern day horsefly. In addition...... this long legged fly has enormous eyes, 2mm round & cherry red! Perfectly detailed transparent anatomy. You definately do not need magnification to see this insect. It is huge! I estimate these tunnel formations to be a very, very small percentage of the copal found from this location. About 1/2% out of tons of kilos. Rare to begin with. I find these elongated copal tunnel straws to be the very best Madagascar has to offer. So the controversy still rages concerning this young copal amber. Some experts say 500,000 to 1,500,000 million years in age from the Pleistocene Era. Others claim Miocene in age which is at least 40 million years old. Then t are those who will convince you it is no older than 200 years in age ....if that!....maybe yesterday. I will take the middle ground. What if t is a range of age as in copal/amber found elsew? These extruded tunnels of copal are the coolest. T are many other forms of copal ranging from huge hunks to small icicle shaped tunnels. Classic amber is prehistoric tree sap called succinite which contains enough succinic acid
