BRITISH OLD MASTER PORTRAIT CIRCLE ALLAN RAMSAY (1713-1784) TITLE: "PORTRAIT OF A LADY" ARTIST. circle ALLAN RAMSAY (1713-1784)TITLE. "PORTRAIT OF A LADY"DESCRIPTION. An original circa 1740 oil on canvas portrait of a lady. Fine brush work and detail. It is a fine example of an early British Old master portrait attributed by Christies to Allan Ramsay or one of his circle.This is a quality portrait of a so far unknown sitter.Provenance - - Midlands estate CONDITION. Oil on canvas reliined around 1900 . Image size 75cm by 61cm. FRAME. H oused in a fine carved 18th century frame 97cm by 84cm. Minor ware. BIOGRAPHYAllan Ramsay was born in Edinburgh , Scotland , the eldest son of Allan Ramsay , poet and author of The Gentle Shepherd . From the age of twenty he studied in London under the Swedish painter Hans Hysing , and at the St. Martin's Lane Academy; leaving in 1736 for Rome and Naples , where he worked for three years under Francesco Solimena and Imperiali ( Francesco Fernandi ). On his return in 1738 he first settled in Edinburgh, attracting attention by his head of Duncan Forbes of Culloden and his full-length portrait of the Duke of Argyll , later used on Royal Bank of Scotland banknotes.
