Mata Ortiz Pottery Roberto Olivas Carved Painted Polished Clay Mexican Folk Art

QUALITY MATA ORTIZ POTTERY AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE
BY TALENTED SECOND GENERATION POTTER ROBERTO OLIVAS
MEDIUM CARVED AND PAINTED CLAY POT
Roberto Olivas is only in his 30's, but quite gifted at working with clay. He is married to Yadira Silveira, and as such he is also the brother in law of the famous Lila Silveira. He learned the art of carving out designs in pottery from Tavo Silveira, and he does a magnificent job in the carving and the painting of his pottery. Roberto Olivas has been making pottery for about 15 years now, and won first place in the Mata Ortiz Concurso (juried award show) in 2007. More recently in 2015 Roberto took home the second prize in his category. The larger size pot is carved, painted and then a polish is applied to achieve a high shine, a style found in the neighborhood of Porvenir. Roberto used a gorgeous creamy white clay color, combined with black, brown and a darker brown almost mauvey paint... very unusual combination of the carved, polished and painted designs.
