[Mexican War] and [5th Texas Infantry]. Five Private Westly Lucas Letters all from Texas and dated October 3, 1845; December 17, 1845; March 8, 1846; June 2, 1846; September 5, 1847. Private Lucas, a member of the 5th Texas Infantry, Co. "H", writes each letter to his wife in Tampa Bay, Florida, concerning his arrival in Corpus Christi, Texas; the beginning of the Mexican War during the Siege of Fort Texas; and the battle for Mexico City. Throughout, he includes mostly military content, including information about troop movements. Many letters are fragile at the folds; some separations have occurred, though none complete. Some repairs. Expected soiling and staining. From Corpus Christi on March 8, 1846, Lucas informs his wife that "we break up our Encampment here to morrow and take the line of march for the Rio Grand what will be the result I am unable to say. . . We all expect to have a fight with the Mexicans." Only weeks after the U.S. declared war on Mexico, Lucas writes a letter from Matamoros, Mexico, (dated June 2, 1846), giving her "some account of the proceedings of the army." He then reports that after the Mexican Army bombarded the Americans at Fort Texas for several days, Lucas and the American force "advanced to meet the enemy it was in the open field. . . .
