Album Harold Dalton's butterfly and insect scale arrangements are among the most desirable of microscope slides to collectors. The meticulous attention to detail and skill of manipulation of the microscopic pieces of the arrangement is obvious. His slides are rare and usually take the form of vases of flowers or cornucopias surrounded by butterflies. This example, titled Butterfly scales, diatoms and scales of Carculio Imperialis arranged as a cross is particularly unusual (Carculio Imperialis is a Diamond Beetle). The image is made up of around 400 scales and diatoms.
The Museum of Jurassic Technology in LA recently published details of a collection of these "micromosiacs" online and in the form of viewmaster reels. Details on Dalton and his work can be found :
