What a wonderful piece of midcentury California art pottery by Doris Birkland (1925-2011). Doris Birkland started Doris Birkland Art Studio in Carmel, California in the 1950s and 1960s. It's unclear what the exact date is but she moved the studio to Cannery Row in Monterey, California, I was say about the late 1960s. Her obituary says her studio was next door to Doc Rickett's, famous from Steinbeck's book Cannery Row. Her education states California College of Arts and Crafts, Mills College and Stanford. She was active in the arts community near her home. It's not clear if she ever bumped elbows with the biggies there in California from the 1960s like Paul Soldner or Peter Voulkos. With that being said Doris had a fantastic understanding of classical pottery forms. This weed pot looks hand thrown. She also embellished the pots surface with a series of concentric lines going down the form. It is a high gloss glaze. I like how the glaze color finished. It is more thinly applied around the top and spot. Condition is very good. No chips or cracks. There are a few areas where the glaze color did not take the glossy glaze. Check out the photos, very nice piece indeed!
