FROM RALPH J. GLEASON COLLECTION/SEE OUR OTHERS 's a beautiful Near Mint--in fact oh so close to Mint FD-43-OP-1 Concert Poster made to advertise the great Moby Grape, The Sparrow (soon to be Steppenwolf), and The Charlatans at the Avalon Ballroom in January, 1967. The artwork is by Stanley Mouse & Alton Kelley, and the poster is in stunning condition, with a small (and I mean very small) ding in the lower left corner, but otherwise no flaws at all. As nice and fresh as you could ask for. And yes, it has the Double-H Press credit below the Family Dog phone number, confirming this to be a first printing.
This poster comes from the collection of the late Ralph J. Gleason (1917-1975;) one of the most influential jazz and pop music critics of all time. He was a central figure in the San Francisco rock scene, helped organize the Monterey Pop Festival, co-founded Rolling Stone magazine, and was a cofounder of the Monterey Jazz Festival.
When Gleason joined the San Francisco Chronicle in 1950, he initiated the first regular coverage of jazz and pop music in the mainstream US media.
