Model "Kerm Owens" Steam Donkey Logging Engine A Scale model of an antique Steam Donkey Logging Engine Made of heavy Iron, Wood, and Steel. The Steam Donkey Logging Engine was invented in the early 1880s as a way to drag felled logs out of the forest. The steam engine powered the winches, which wound in long ropes tied to logs. Payson Arizona’s logging history started with creation of the Kaibab Saw Mill that was first started by Keith and Kerm Owens and was known as Owens Brothers Lumber. They built their first mill in the backyard of Frank and Ethel Owens on Oak Street in 1934. The model came with the label shown in the pics saying, “Designed and Constructed by Kerm Owens, Payson, AZ”. I don’t know if that means Kerm actually built this model or if it means the model is of a full-sized machine built by Kerm Ownes. Amazing piece of Machinery! Lots of moving parts. No idea if it was intended to be a working model or not, as I know nothing of “Steam Donkeys”. By hand turning the wheel, the piston functions smoothly. The only removable part I see, without “messing with it”, is the smoke stack, which lifts off. About 24 ½ inches long, 18 ½ inches tall, and 9 inches wide. Weight : 26 ½ pounds!
