From the 20's until the 50's, upscale shoe stores utilized fluoroscopes as a selling tool allowing parents (for one) to make certain that their children's new shoes were properly fitted and did not unnecessarily compress or distort the alignment of the bones of the foot. This Simplex machine had three 'viewers', one for the child, one for the salesman and another for the parent. Meanwhile, the salesman's finger was on the button while the child's feet were bathed in many, many more milliroentgens that one might get from a lifetime of dental x-rays. Burns to the skin of the feet as well as damage to the salesperson's extremities were not too uncommon and by the mid-50's, many states outlawed the use of such devices and many were summarily destroyed. This is one of the few survivors left. Electrically, the unit needs a line cord and the x-ray tube is no longer present; however, the transformer and related circuitry tests OK The veneer is poor on the upper surfaces, as shown, but the cabinet is sound and all hardware except for a small escutcheo in the center of the viewing panel is present. One or two of these sold over the past couple of years have been missing the metal viewing 'hoods' which really make the appearance of the unit! T is also a knob missing on a shutter for the RH viewer but this is easily duplicated or replaced with
