Numbered (3778) & Traceable Spanish War Service medal/Co I, 9th NY Vol. Infantry

This is a numbered (3778) and traceable Spanish War Service medal. It has the original full wrapped, flat locking clasp brooch and original ribbon. The rear of the brooch shows some oxidation and the ribbon shows some minor wear at the jump ring. The planchet is in excellent condition, with no edge knocks and the numbers are well impressed, clear and easy to read. This medal was produced by the Joseph Mayer Company, contract #9114F, in 1920.

This particular medal was awarded to Private Frank H. Smith. Mr. Smith was born in New York City (Brooklyn) on August 3, 1877. He enlisted in Company I, of the 9th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment on May 2, 1898 at New York City. The 9th NY regiment was reorganized on May 3, 1898 as a 12 company unit. They first mustered at Camp Townsend, NY and after serveral weeks of drill, were sent to Camp George H. Thomas, at Chickamauga Park, Tennessee. While at Camp Thomas they were attached to the 1st Brigade of the 2nd Division of the 3rd Army Corps, and were brigated with the 1st Arkansas and the 2nd Kentucky. They remained at Camp Thomas until September when they were returned to New York City and mustered out on November 15, 1898, never leaving US soil and never firing a shot. Mr. Smith died in San Francisco, CA on August 5, 1941.
