OPERA GOLDEN AGE AUTOGRAPHS: Gadski, Baron, Slezak, Alda, Lehmann ++++!A superb grouping of rare autographs from the Golden Age. Included are Leo Slezak, Frances Alda (affixed beneath Slezak), Liza Lehman, Johanna Gadski and Alice Baron. Johanna Gadski (1872-1932), famous German Soprano who was a member of the Metropolitan Opera from 1899 until the US entered WWI. After that, she became embroiled in political turmoil because of her German husband, Captain Hans Tauscher, who supplied arms and munitions to the German Army and was arrested, but later acquitted, in a plot to blow up Canada's Welland Canal. **Only the LOWER Gadski autograph shown is included Liza LEHMANN (SOPRANO, COMPOSER): Large AUTOGRAPHA bold signature on a large sheet. Small hole and tear slightly affecting the loops of on L and the H, else fine. UNCOMMON. (b London, 11 July 1862; d Pinner, 19 Sept 1918). English soprano and composer. She was the daughter of Amelia Chambers (widely known under the initials A.L. as a teacher, composer and arranger of songs) and Rudolf Lehmann, a German painter. She studied singing with Alberto Randegger and Jenny Lind in London, and composition with Niels Raunkilde in Rome, Wilhelm Freudenberg in Wiesbaden and Hamish MacCunn in London.
