Rare and original Erie Canal related document, March 12, 1860 "Articles of Agreement" signed by numerous dignitaries including U.S. Representatives Freeman Clarke and Lewis Selye, between the New York State Canal Board and the Monroe County Bank Rochester. "Whereas, The Canal Board has designated the said Monroe County Bank to receive one fourth the deposits of canal tolls collected at Rochester," and further describing how often the tolls would be collected and how they would be accounted for. Signed, sealed and notarized in numerous places. Includes signature block with four signatures, attesting to the "worth" of four men, as follows:"The said Freeman Clarke of Rochester is worth 100,000 dollars The said Silas O. Smith of De(?) is worth 10,000 dollars The said Leri A. Ward of De(?) is worth 10,000 dollars The said Lewis Selye is worth 10,000 dollars"Below this, the document is individually hand signed by all four men.Freeman Clarke was a U.S. Representatives during the Civil War. Born in Troy, New York, Clarke went into business for himself at the age of fifteen. He moved to Rochester in 1845. He became director and president of banks, railroads, and telegraph and trust companies of Rochester and New York CitySilas O.
