Ivan Payne (1923 - 1977) is one of Barbados' pioneer artists. An important Award of Excellence is named after him. The Ivan Payne Award for Excellence in Art is the most prestigious award for art in Barbados. The following is from the website of the National Cultural Foundation of Barbados: The IVAN PAYNE Award Ivan Payne was a self-taught artist originally from the parish of Saint Peter. As he established himself in Barbados and the Caribbean as one of our foremost fine artists, his works were quickly recognisable by their trademark frames---simple in form and pure white in colour.Some of his most famous pieces hang in fine homes, businesses and museums across the region.
