You are bidding on an original ( as found) Civil War Model 1842 cartridge box for the .69 Cal. musket. This box was found with a large collection of Civil War items It has been compared to other authentic examples in museums and private hands and the consenses is it is original. The box did not have the plates when it was found, but the SNY plate, which is a standard size and used as a test, fits perfectly. The box plate DOES NOT come with the box. T are holes for the breast and box plate, but they were removed apparently a long time ago. The sling, which is very rare to find intact has the initials MD carved on it. T are no periods and they could either represent a persons initials, usually with periods, or they could represent the pro Confederate State of Maryland and be the reason the plates are missing. Could be? We can only assume or speculate, but the possibility exists that this box is Confederate. If not, it is a very nice example of a Model 1842 cartridge box. It has a suple feel to the sling and the leather finish has a nice patina. It is complete with the two zinc inserts which wer not removed nor disturbed. Perhaps the winning bidder will be brave enough to carefully remove them for further clues as to its origin. It has no maker's stamp.
