This is a very fine etching by Walter Dendy Sadler depicting a courtly elderly gentleman happily offering his arm to his seated wife. His pleasant demeanor is in sharp contrast to her bored, vacant expression. It is titled “For Fifty Years / Old, But Gallant” in the center below the image. In the lower left is the publisher's oval embossed stamp. Credits across the print above the title and directly beneath the image read: “Painted by W.Dendy Sadler / London Published in 1894 by L.H. Lefevre, King St., St. James S.W., the Proprietor / Etched by W.H. Boucher” . The artist’s signature is printed within the image in the lower left. This original etching is printed on heavy stock and has good margins. There is a very small stain to the left of the title at the very bottom of the image. There is a small amount of residue of glue from an old mat. Size: Overall 20 1/2 in. x 25 3/4 in. Walter Dendy Sadler was born in 1854 in Dorking, England. He exhibited in London from 1872 at the Royal Academy and the Society of British Artists on Suffolk Street. He was a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Sadler has always been noted for the realism and attention to detail that is apparent in his works. Many of Sadler's paintings have been reproduced by later artists.
