The mastery of the artist, to create regular objects of life into art, is evident in this work. This is one of the most celebrated contributions of Andy Warhol to the Modern Art of the 20th century. The Guns are considered to be one of the most powerful and essential images Warhol. The theme of guns emerged as a distinctive theme in Warhol’s work first in the 1960s, along with his Marilyn Monroe portraits. The theme of guns was heightened in 1968 when he was shot and critically injured by Valerie Solanas. Compelled by that near-death experience, Warhol created several artworks, including the “Guns” series, duplicating Solanas’ revolver and other guns. At around the same time as he was painting guns, Warhol was also doing a series of knife pictures. Indeed, the first idea was to show them together, along with some dollar-sign paintings, at the Leo Castelli Gallery.
