Rare, beautiful patriotic cover and 4 1/2 page letter sent from Alex Orr McGowen in Auroraville, Wisconsin to his son Robert James Orr McGowan a fifer in Company G of the famed 5th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, dated 26 March 1862. The 5th Wisconsin saw action in many of the Virginia battles and at Antietam and Gettysburg. Robert James Orr McGowan was mustered into the 5th on May 5, 1861 and mustered out on Dec 6, 1862 due to disability, right before the Battle of Fredericksburg. He later re-enlisted in the 33rd Wisconsin, going on to become Captain of Company B in the 47th Wisconsin. He survived the war and died in 1907. The cover has a fabulous shielded eagle starburst on the left hand side with a red Washington stamp cleanly canceled with two pen strokes. The cover was cleanly opened with a knife on the stamp end. The back of the envelope has no markings. The letter is finely written by his father in response to McGowan's letter of March 14th. It is mostly news from home, family health, home renovation , etc but also mentions the 17th Wi sconsin, the Wisconsin Irish Regiment, Capt.
