Pair of Amethyst Freeblown Glass Pieces made by Clevenger Brothers Glassworks , Clayton, NJ- 1930's Handled Mug and a Tumbler with a crimped foot. Both pontiled. No chips or cracks Clevenger was the last of the old time South Jersey Glasshouses. In the 18th & 19th century, South Jersey was the center of glass manufacturing in America. There were dozens of glass factories, employing thousands of workers. At that time all glass was made by hand and the masters blowers were true craftsmen. After the invention of the automatic glass machines in the early 1900's, South Jersey glass workers were no longer needed and moved on to other employment. A few however, continued the tradition of South Jersey Glass blowing by operating small glasshouses. Over time these too disappeared as the old time masters died off. Clevenger was one the more successful & prolific of these. It operated much the same as the great glass factories of the 1700 & 1800's, but on a much smaller scale. The glass formulas were from the original Moore Bros Glass Works in Clayton(circa 1870). Their glass often contains the impurities of Early American Glass - bubbles, batch stone, cord and blisters. Operating from 1930 till 1999, the small unpretentious factory has partially collapsed and will likely be demolished. Their tools, mold & equipment have been sold and Clevenger
