Pair WW II 457th Bomb Group wool patches w/ labels on back 8th Air Force B-17's
- Source: eBay
Great looking pair of WW II Army Air Force patches from the 457th Bomb Group, nicknamed "The Fireball Outfit". The 457th was assigned to the 8th Air Force during WW II flying B-17's from England. Each of these patches are embroidered on an a dark yellow/gold colored wool base and have a silver material backing. I have been told this silver material is the same material that airships and blimps were made of during WW II. The patches have the original manufacture's label on the back from Akron Felt and Chenille Company in Akron, Ohio. Akron is also home to Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company which during the 1930s was known as the Goodyear-Zeppelin Company so this very well may be what the silver material is on the rear. Both patches are approximately 5.25" x 4.25". They are identical except for the lower right quadrant on one is red and on the other maroon. I do not know what the color difference signifies if anything. Both are in excellent mint unused condition with no damage or mothing. Thanks for looking.
