PIPE: EAGLE EFFIGY, PIKES COUNTY , ILLINOIS , 19th Century Mound Find

Length: 7”

Width: 3 ¼”

Height: 2”

Weight: 1 lb 6 oz

Back in the 1870s-1880s, a few mileseast of Griggsville, on the banks of the Illinois River this curious stone carved eagle effigy pipe was uncovered. Specifically, it was removed from a small earthen mound where Napolean Hallow leads into the river.

This intriguing artifact was acquired from out-of-state descendants of the original finder. It and a box of other pipes, axes and points were acquired in one lot several years ago during a field trip to the region.

The pipe is made from a tan, fine-grained stone. There is much discoloration throughout the piece as well as abrasion scratches, dings and notches. Extraction grooves are evident within the smoke bowl.

About a mile north of Napolean Hollow are a series of mounds that were actively looked into during the latter part of the 19th century.

Listed exactly as I acquired this unique carved pipe.
