This one has the two most important qualities, quality and condition. Dating to around 1880, this an absolutely stunning example of what is known as a double action lap desk or writing slope, opening not once but twice. The lid firstly opens to form to form the writing surfaces, then opens a second time 90 degrees to form a integral letter holder or stationery rack. There is also a removable pen tray with various compartments below and a brass topped inkwell, in excellent undamaged condition. Also present is the original leather blotter folder with silk cord. The opposite side (essentially the lid) also opens to reveal a large compartment, perfect for storing stationery. The lid itself is fitted with an elasticated memo board to store all sorts of bits and pieces. The box is signed by the Scottish retailer, in two places, once inside and once on the bottom of the exterior,embossed in gold " Carlisle & Watts, Makers, 49 No Hanover St, Edbr ". The leather on the exterior is beautifully embossed for decoration and does also include the previous owners gold embossed initials S. P. The leather throughout is faultless, one of the very best I have come across in many years, and yes, it does have the original working key!
