The Play-A-Sax was sold in the early 1930's and uses a 16 note paper roll. When an opening in the roll passes over a reed hole in the instrument, the appropriate note plays. You blow into the mouthpiece and turn a little crank to play the tune on the roll. These are pretty rare and seldom have much of the original gold paint. This one has about 50% of the gold paint and original decal. T is no "take-up" spool, but the paper roll spools are the same or one could easily be made. T are 2 rolls included and we see rolls from time to time on ebay. This item does work! A nice little novelty musical collectible and conversation piece.
