An Antique Line Engraving of "The Rainbow" (Over the River Exe, Devonshire) Engraved by Charles Turner from a drawing by Thomas Girtin Expressly for "Gems of Art" Produced in London. c1840 This item comprises the engraving as described above in good condition. It is a genuine antique being over 150 years old - NOT a modern reproduction. NB: This item is being offered, suitably mounted, ready for framing FORMAT Overall Size:- 8 1/4 " x 11 3/4" including the mount. Image Size:- 5 1/2" x 7 1/2" approx About the Subject... The River Exe in England rises near the village of Simonsbath, on Exmoor in Somerset, near the Bristol Channel coast. However, it flows more or less directly due south, so that most of its length lies in Devon. It reaches the sea at a substantial ria, the Exe Estuary, on the south (English Channel) coast of Devon. Historically, its lowest bridging point was at Exeter, though there is now a viaduct for the M5 motorway about 3 kilometres (2 mi) south of the city centre.The river's name derives from the Celtic word Isca meaning, simply, water. The river gives its name to the city of Exeter and many other settlements along its course, including Exford, Up Exe, Nether Exe, Exwick, Exton, Exminster, and Exebridge, where it is joined by the River Barle.
