This is an unusual piece; we came across it at an estate liquidation: A paper framed painted ceramic disc with a metal stand stamped with the Raphael Tuck marks. The porcelain oval centerpiece shows a winter scene in brown monochrome of a county house, trees, a pond, and a sweet looking couple standing in the snowy scene. The paintwork is in a deep brown. It is not a transfer pattern, but rather looks applied from an originally hand-painted design. The cardboard and paper frame has a beveled inside mat rim and irregularly spaced pinking around the outside. It has a pretty polychrome design of gold Christmas bells hanging from tree boughs, red berries, and a pinkish-blue sky. The back has glued paper, a faded green, and the stamped tin sign, gold in color, is applied with two tabs on the sides which fit into slots in the cardboard backing. The stand is stamped Raphael Tuck & Sons, and London, Paris, New York, and also has the Tuck artist's pallet logo and RST initials. The piece measures 5" by 4.5". The stand works well.
