This is a truly incredible and rare 6th plate (3 1/4 x 2 3/4 in.) tintype of two Civil War Union officers in full dress uniform and on horseback. The focus of the portrait is of the handsome, bearded officer in the foreground. Wearing his kepi he holds the reins of his horse; a sword in scabbard and holstered pistol are at his side. Adding to the portrait's appeal is the gold touched on the officer's buttons and epaulet as well as the horses's accoutrements. The naturalistic backdrop of the tintype is vague - the image may have been taken outdoors or in a very large studio. As this tintype was found in a Massachusetts estate, the officers were likely members of a regiment from that New England state. This striking tintype is in very good condition - the image is amazingly clear with nice contrast. T is some dust under the glass cover which I have not cleaned and shows on the images listed. The hinge on the embossed leather case is split. Please examine the detailed images and ask any questions before bidding.
