This is an incredible find. After purchasing this sword from an old Civil War collectors estate along with some other relics the crude cast Iron sword that screamed Confederate, I was in the process of turning it over and noticed faint lettering on the cross guard and after a closer examination it was 27 N.C. and on the flip side a letter V etched in. I have never seen another solid cast short sword with a bayonet type blade in a crude construction from cast iron. Not even sure how to price one of these as I have not seen another.. is some information on this storied regiment I located in research. An absolutely incredible find. "The 27th Infantry Regiment was formed at New Bern, North Carolina, in June, 1861, as the 9th Regiment. Reorganized in September as the 17th, its designation was later changed to the 27th. Men of this unit were recruited in Orange, Guilford, Wayne, Pitt, Lenoir, Perquimans, and Jones counties. It was assigned to General R. Ransom's, J. G. Walker's, and Cooke's Brigade. After fighting at New Bern, the 27th saw action in the Seven Days' Battles and at Sharpsburg and Fredericksburg. During the spring and summer of 1863 it served in North Carolina, South Carolina, and in the Richmond area.
