This wonderful old stoneware jar from Ironton, Ohio is circa 1890. It was probably made by the Ironton Pottery Company, a local business, that produced quality stoneware beginning in 1887. This crock has a beautiful blue gray coloring. The stenciling is nice and legible, although the O for Ohio is light.T are very few surface imperfections which are usually common in this type of pottery. It makes a wonderful display at 10" tall. The diameter of the base is 6-1/2". I believe this is a 2 gallon capacity. T is a minor chip on the bottom of crock, but this is on the back side of jar and can not be seen from the front. Also t is a small chip on the inner lip of the jar. I can notfind any cracks. A mark on the bottom of the jar looks like a very light spider, but it may just be age showing in the glaze. It can not be felt with a finger nail and would not show up in a photograph.I was unable to find out any information on the M. G. Winters Fancy & Staple Grocerys company, however, I did find documentation on a Winter / Winters family living in the Lawrence County area during that era. It was probably oneof these family members that owned the business on Railroad street. It would be interesting to track down thehistory of it.I have attached several photos for your consideration. This would be a great piece to start or add to a collection.
