Nelson Aldrich Rockefeller, son of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., was Governor of New York from 1959-1973, during which time he twice sought the Republican Presidential nomination (1964 and 1968). During World War II, he had served as Assistant Secretary of State. Gov. Rockefeller resigned in 1973 to begin planning his 1976 campaign for the Republican Presidential nomination since President Richard Nixon couldn't seek a third term. When Vice President Spiro T. Agnew resigned later in 1973, under the provisions of the 25th Amendment, Pres. Nixon appointed House Minority Leader Gerald R. Ford as Vice President. When Pres. Nixon resigned in 1974, Vice President Ford became President and appointed former Gov. Rockefeller as Vice President. His nomination was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 19, 1974.
