RARE ORIG - 348TH F.G. P47 THUNDERBOLT BUZZES FIELD P47 THUNDERBOLT - NEW GUINEA/ AP PHOTOGRAPHER ED WILLIS DESCRIPTION is a fine composition depicting a Republic P-47 "Thunderbolt" fighter from the 348th Fighter Group (Kearby's Thunderbolts) buzzing the field in New guinea. The practice indicates the pilot, returning from a mission, has reason to celebrate, most likely having scored a kill on a Japanese aircraft. That the aircraft is returning from a mission without it's external fuel tank would also imply combat. In the foreground on the field is a tracked vehicle for construction/field repair. The Commanding Officer of the 348th FG, Col. Neel Kearby was the only U.S. pilot awarded the Medal of Honor for actions taken in a P-47(shooting down six Japanese aircraft in a single mission against an overwhelming number of enemy planes). He was a leading ace, competing with P-38 Aces Lynch and Bong (America's Ace of Aces) dispite flying what others considered a less viable aircraft, until he was killed in action after scoring his 22nd confirmed kill. The photo is black and white, with a slight sepia tone owing to its age. It is a crisp, clear image. The photo measures 3 1/2" X 4 1/2" and is stamped "passed by military censor GHQ SWPA".This photo is from the album compiled in New Guinea by Associated Press photographer Ed Widdis. This
