Offered is a reproduction Rev War American Domestic Regimental Coat. While the common image of the revolutionary war soldier is of a minuteman in civilian garb, the truth is that by September 1777, the American Army was almost fully outfitted in regimental coats, having received from France "cloathing for 30,000 men." Pa. Gazette, 9 Sep. 1777. By September of 1778, one year later, the army had received another 20,000 regimental coats made in France. These coats wore out after a year's use, and no more such shipments from were received from the French. Those who did not receive French coats, or whose wore out, often recieved a regimental coat made in America, and hence the name 'Domestic Regimental." Domestic Regimentals were made in the context of shortages of materials, labor, and cash, and so many corners were cut, including cotton rather than wool linings, absence of pockets, and sewn down lapels and cuffs. This Domestic Regimental is made of light weight blue wool so you don't fry in the heat. It is a full length regimental, NOT a light infantry short coat, meaning that the skirt comes almost to the knee. It has a white cotton lining. It has a red wool facing on the functional collar.
