Up for auction is Royal Copenhagen's Rosebud figurine.Royal Copenhagen, is a manufacturer of porcelain products that was founded in Copenhagen, in May 1775, under the protection of Queen Juliane Marie. It is recognized by its factory mark, the three wavy lines above each other, symbolizing Denmark's three straits: Oresund, the Great Belt, and the Little Belt.Theodor Madsen (1880-1965) is credited with carving this extremely rare figurine in 1928. He began his career as a model builder trainee at Royal Copenhagen in 1886, followed by formal art education at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts from 1898-1902.As an independent freelance artist, Theodor Madsen worked on and off for Royal Copenhagen, designing numerous sculptures, primarily of birds, dogs, and other animals. He was also honored as the featured signing artist at The Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory during four separate periods, totaling 35 years in all.In 1928 he created one of his rare figurines in human form: The Rosebud (3009). It is a female child sitting in a kind of draped and gathered garment, which subtly resembles the petals of a rosebud.
