Royal Doulton Character Jug of the Year 2005 Lord Horatio Nelson An excellent collectable Character Jug of the Year 2005 which celebrated the bicentenary of a great event in a great year - Nelson's victory at Trafalgar in 1805. The main jug is a confident and handsome portrait of Nelson, complemented by the bow of HMS Victory itself as the handle, with a cannon on the reverse. Modelled by Martyn Alcock it will be packaged in a silk lined presentation box which will contain a certificate, swing tag, and in pack leaflet.Lord Nelson has often depicted with an eye patch - the most famous exception being the landmark statue in Trafalgar Square. He in fact lost the sight in his right eye at the Battle of Calvi in 1794 - not the right eye itself - and later his right arm at the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1797. It was Lord Nelson (1758-1805) who ensured that Britannia ruled the waves from 1794 to 1805, during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars with France, ultimately securing the British Isles from sea borne invasion. Yet his final victory came at the cost of his own life to a French sniper's bullet on October 21 1805 at Cape Trafalgar off the Spanish coast, now commemorated as Trafalgar Day.With the handle set to his left, the Lord Nelson Jug is an ideal companion piece to the Napoleon Bonaparte Jug which features the handle
