This has not been on a layout. Where mainline meets Main Street, the Combination Depot stands as a symbol of railroad power and technology. From his bay-window office in the center of the building, the agent reigns supreme as he answers the telegraph or loads the US Mail. One the other side is the public waiting room, where dark wood walls, iron benches and colorful travel posters are guarded by a huge coal stove. On the far end stands the freight room, where almost anything that can't be mined, manufactured or grown locally is delivered by the trains. Generations of small-town Americans were served by these combination depots, so called because they "combined" three operations under one roof. By the 1880s, railroads large and small were building new depots like this in smaller towns.
